His birth name is Thomas Anthony Hollander, and he was born to Anthony Hollander, who is of Czech Jew descent. Hollander grew up in an average Christian family, having a prestigious lifestyle. His father was the teacher in a prestigious school and was the science department coordinator.

Hollander was into acting since his early years. He studied at Dragon School and Abingdon School. He was already into theatre and used to perform in stages production of the National Youth Theatre and National Youth Music Theatre and was already a member of those theatres. In 2001, he received numerous awards for his role as Anthony Meredith in the comedy film Gosford Park. He won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture and FFCC Award for Best Ensemble Cast.

After numerous films between 2001 till 2004, he finally received a nomination for the British Independent Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for his supporting role as Etherege in the Australian drama film, The Libertine in 2004. In 2005, he received Evening Standard British Film Awards for his performance as Mr. Collins in Pride & prejudice. In 2009, he was nominated for British Independent Film Award for Best Supporting Actor after portraying the character of Simon Foster in the movie In the Loop.

His performance was highly praised after his lead role in the play named Tartuffe.
