Jesy Nelson is an English singer/dancer/songwriter and a British girl group Little Mix member. She was a participant in “The X Factor” in 2011 as a soloist but later became a member of Little Mix along with Perrie Edwards, Jade Thirwall, and Leigh-Anne Pinnock. She was also the presenter of the BBC Three documentary “Jesy Nelson: Odd One Out,” which is a documentary based on online bullying.

Early Life

Jessica Louise Nelson was born as the second youngest child of John and Janice Nelson on 14th June 1991 in Romford, where she spent most of her childhood. She has three siblings; two older and a younger. Her father, John, was a businessman, and her mother was a Police Community Service Officer. They separated when Jesy was just five.

She graduated from Jo Richardson Community School and attended Abbs Cross Academy and Arts College. She has also attended Sylvia Young and Yvonne Rhodes Theatre School. She had to move twelve times during her childhood as it was hard for her mother to raise four kids alone. She has also worked at Dagenham as a barmaid.

Jesy Nelson auditioned as a soloist in the eighth series of “The X Factor” in 2011. She was then placed in a Faux Pas group in the group boot camp stage after she failed in the boot camp section. The group failed again, and Jesy and Edwards, along with Thirwall and Pinnock, were placed in the new group Rhythmix under mentor Tulisa. Barlow praised them as the best girl band ever on The X Factor during the first round of Live Shows. After their name Rythmix collided with a charity organization, they changed their name to “Little Mix” in October 2011.

They performed better and better and won the show on 11th December. After their win on the show, they were signed by Simon Cowell’s record label Syco Music. They released covers of “End of Time” and “We Are Young” on their YouTube channel before their debut single. Their body was praised by viewers and received positive feedbacks. They released their debut single and performed at the T4 on the Beach concert in July of 2012. They released their debut studio album in November of the same year titled “DNA.”

After the release, the band went on a Tour of England, Scotland, Wales, and North Ireland under “The DNA Tour” in 2013. Their single “How Ya Doin’? Featured the Grammy winner Missy Elliot in 2013. The same year they released their next studio album titled “Salute.” They did the “The Salute Tour” in 2014. The band has toured after the album’s release every time under the tour name of their album. Their Summer Tour in 2020 was called off. Get Weird, Glory Days, and LM5 are their other studio albums.

Jesy Nelson was announced to be the host of the BBC documentary “Jesy Nelson: Odd One Out,” based on cyberbullying, mental health, and body image. The show went on air in September of 2019. Jesy Nelson has faced bullying since “Little Mix” formation during “The X Factor.” She was also seen as the guest mentor for “The Voice UK” in 2020.

Jesy Nelson was announced to judge Little Mix’s talent show “Little Mix: The Search.” They had announced the winner would be featured on their Summer 2020 tour and help them establish as a brand. But, unfortunately, the show was postponed due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic.

Little Mix has sold over 60 million records since its debut in 2011.

Jesy was also the co-writer of Britney Spears and Iggy Azalea’s single “Pretty Girls,” released in 2015.

She was the victim of online bullying, which caused her to attempt suicide in 2013.
