Paula Dietz’s Ex-husband’s Career
On January 15, 1974, Rader strangled four members of the Otero family in their Wichita home—parents Joseph and Julie and two of their children, Josephine and Joseph Jr.—before leaving with a watch and a radio.
Choking and souvenir-taking would become part of his modus operandi or pattern of behavior. He left semen at the scene and later said Rader takes sexual pleasure from killing. The Oteros’ 15-year-old son, Charlie, came home later that day and discovered the bodies.
Dennis Rader struck again a few months later. On April 4, 1974, Dennis waited in the apartment of a young woman named Kathryn Bright before spearing and strangling her when she returned home. He also twice shot her brother, Kevin, though he survived.
Kevin later described Dennis as “an average-sized guy, bushy mustache, ‘psychotic’ eyes,” according to a Time magazine article.
In October 1974, he placed a letter in a public library book in which he took responsibility for killing the Oteros. The letter ended up in a local newspaper, and the poorly written note gave authorities some idea of who they were dealing with.
Rader wrote, “It’s hard to control myself. You probably call me ‘insane with sexual perversion hang-up.'” Dennis warned that he would strike again, noting, “The code words for me will bind them, torture them, kill them, B.T.K.” The initials stuck, and the murderer became known by variations of the “B.T.K. killer” moniker or simply “B.T.K.”

Rader’s next known crimes occurred in 1977. In March that year, he strangled Shirley Vian after locking her children in the bathroom. In December, he choked Nancy Fox in her home and called the officer to report the homicide. Shortly, in January 1978, he sent a poem to a local newspaper about the Vian killing.
Several weeks later, Rader sent a letter to a local T.V. station stating that Dennis was accountable for killing Vian, Fox, and another unknown victim. Rader also alluded to several other notorious killers, including Ted Bundy and David Berkowitz, known as the “Son of Sam.”
Despite his cat-and-mouse game with authorities, Rader could keep the lid on his secret, murderous life. Reportedly a wise husband, he and his wife had a son in 1975 and a daughter in 1978. The next year, he graduated from Wichita State University with a degree in the administration of justice. Still, he continued to taunt authorities and was poised to strike again.
In April 1979, Rader waited in an older woman’s home but left before she returned. Rader sent her a letter informing her that B.T.K. had been there. The authorities published the 1977 recording of his phone call to police to catch him, hoping that someone might recognize the voice.
After several years without a known crime, Dennis killed his neighbor Marine Hedge on April 27, 1985, and his body was found days later on the side of the road. Next, Rader killed Vicki Wegerle in her home. Finally, on January 19, 1991His final known victim, Dolores Davis, was taken from her home. Rader was so brutal that he was listed as the Most Depraved Serial Killers in history.
