Her full name is Michelle Yeoh Choo Kheng and is the daughter of a lawyer, Janet Yeoh, and MCA politician, Yeoh Kian Teik. She was born into a wealthy family and grew up with her 2 brothers namely, Lam Hoe and Robert Yeoh.

Growing up, Yeoh started taking ballet dancing lessons when she was only 4 years old. She attended Main Convent Ipoh school in her city. She moved to the United Kingdom with her family when she was 15 years old. There she attended boarding school and later continued her ballet. She graduated from the Royal Academy of Dance in the UK with a ballet major. Yeoh made her film debut in 1984 from the action-comedy film, The Owl vs Bamboo as Miss Yeung. Following year, she landed a major role in the comedy film Twinkle, Twinkle, Lucky Stars as a Judo instructor. The same year, she starred in the action-comedy film, Yes, Madam as Inspector Ng. Her performance received her Hong Kong Film Award for Best New Performer nomination that year. She then continued on making her appearances in other films like Royal Warriors in 1986, Magnificent Warriors, and Easy Money in 1987.

In 1992, she landed another major role in the Hong Kong action film, Police Story 3: Super Cop alongside Jackie Chan as Inspector Jessica.
