Michael Sheen was born to Irene Thomas and Meyrick on February 5, 1969, in Newport, Wales. His mother was a secretary and his dad was a manager of the British Steel Company. He has Joanne, a younger sister. At the age of 5, the family moved to Wallasey and moved to Port Talbot after three years, where they lived permanently. He studied English, Sociology, and Drama in ‘Blaenbaglan Primary School.’ He pursued his further studies at ‘Neath Port Talbot College.’ 

He was a strong footballer and was offered a place in the youth team at the age of 12 in Arsenal. He was unable to accept the offer because his family hesitated to move to London. He eventually lost interest in soccer. 

Michael Sheen’s acting talent was inherited from his parents, who both performed in local amateur operas and musicals. His dad also worked as a Jack Nicholson professional look-alike. During his childhood, he began to perform with “West Glamorgan Youth Theatre” and “National Youth Theatre,” which probably taught him the complexities of acting as well as work ethic. 

He participated in the ‘Royal Academy of Dramatic Theater’ in 1988 (RADA). He also worked for his studies in a fast-food restaurant, where he earned money. The Society of London Theatre awarded him the ‘Laurence Olivier bursary’ in its second year at ‘RADA.’ He completed his acting degree in 1991.



For the first years of his career, Michael Sheen worked primarily at theatres. He performed his first professional performance in ‘When She Danced’ at ‘The Globe’ when he was still in his last year at ‘RADA in 1991. In 1992, he played ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and the following year’s ‘Don’t Fool with Love.’ In 1993, he also appeared in the ‘Moonlight’ of Harold Pinter and made his TV debut in ‘BBC’ in ‘Gallowglass’ mini-series. 

In 1994, he took on the role of ‘Peer Gynt;’ the same year, he performed at the Paris Theatre in ‘Le Livre de Spencer’ and was performed at the Royal Exchange ‘Charley’s Aunt.’ He was a director and star in The Dresser in 1995 The Seagull. That same year, he debuted in the Othello film, starring Kenneth Branagh.
