Early life

Gugu Mbatha-Raw was born on 21st April of 1983 in the town of Oxfordshire called Oxford in England. Her real name is Gugulethu “Gugu” Sophia Mbatha-Raw, and she is the daughter of Anne Raw and Patrick Mbatha. Her mother was an English nurse, while her father was a South African doctor. She doesn’t have any siblings.

Mbatha-Raw was interested in acting and drama since her early childhood. She attended Henry Box School in Witney, and she used to also participate in various dancing programs like Judy Tompsett School of Dance. She used to also participate in various programs of National Youth Theatre. Later on, she moved to London so she could pursue acting professionally. There she joined the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where she trained and thus began her acting career.

Like many other professional actors and actresses, Gugu Mbatha-Raw started her acting career through theatre. Her first play performance was in a musical called Into the Woods, where she portrayed Cinderella’s ‘s character mother’s character. The play was performed in National Youth Music Theatre in 1999. In 2005, she appeared in 2 other plays, Antony and the Cleopatra as Iras, and in Romeo and Juliet as Juliet Capulet, opposite actor Andrew Garfield.

She also performed in Gethsemane as Monique in 2008. In 2009, she portrayed Ophelia’s character in Shakespeare’s tragic play called Hamlet opposite Jude Law. She then portrayed another main character named Nell Gwynn in Jessica Wale’s play of the same name in 2015.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw made her film debut in 2007 by playing a small role in the thriller film called Straightheads. Later on, she made her small appearances in the film Larry Crowne and Odd Thomas before landing her lead role in the British period drama film called Belle in 2013. She made the breakthrough from the film Belle earning her numerous awards, including the Miami International Film Festival Awards, the African-American Film Critics Association in 2014, Black Reel Awards, and the Alliance of Women Film Journalists Award 2015.

Following a year in 2014, Gugu Mbatha-Raw dropped another hit film, Beyond the Lights, where she starred as Noni Jean. Her performance earned her Chicago Film Festival Awards and Capri Hollywood International Film Festival Award in 2014, including other nominations.
