Early Life
Delonte West’s full name is Delonte Maurice West. Delonte West was born to parents Delphina Addison and Dimitri West on July 26, 1983, in Washington, D.C. He has a brother named Dimitri West Jr. and a sister named Danielle West.
As a child, he grew up living with several relatives. West was a troubled teen and was engaged in drug abuse and self-harm. Due to this, he was in children’s hospitals for a long time. He completed his high school education at Eleanor Roosevelt High School and later went to Saint Joseph’s University.
Career
During Delonte West’s high school career, he played for the Raiders. They made it to their first state tournament because of Delonte West. The Washington Post named him “All-Met Basketball Player of the Year.”
He averaged 20.2 points per game with 6.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game. He played for St. Joseph’s University and, in his junior year, averaged 6.7 assists and 18.9 points per game.
After his junior year, West left St. Joseph’s. In the 2004 NBA Draft, the Boston Celtics picked him, and he was the 24th overall pick. He played 39 games in the first season, and he suffered from injuries. He averaged only 4.5 points.
Later, he started playing as a point guard. He scored a career-high 31 points against Minnesota Timberwolves on March 4, 2007. He was traded to Seattle SuperSonics in exchange for Ray Allen by the Boston Celtics on June 28 of the same year. In 2008, he played for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
He started in all the 26 games he played. He averaged 10.3 points per game. In the season, he played 61 games. He had an average of 8.3 points per game with 3.2 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game.
Delonte West signed a US$ 12.7 million contract with the Cavs for three years. In the 2009 to 2010 season, West averaged 8.8 per game and started only in three games. He returned to the Boston Celtics on September 1 of 2010. He played as a point guard and backed Rajon Rondo.
Unfortunately, due to a weapon charges case, he got suspended for ten games. He played for the Dallas Mavericks from December 13, 2011, to October 29, 2012.
Delonte West went on to play in the NBA D-League in 2013. Texas Legends signed him on January 25. He made his debut on March 16; the match resulted in an 85-103 loss against the SCW. After the NBA D-League, he played in Fijian Xunxing from 2013 to 2014.
After he departed from Fijian, he played for the Shanghai Sharks. He signed a one-year deal with them in September of 2014. On April 2 of 2015, he had to leave Texas Legends due to an injury. He hasn’t played professional basketball since then.
Personal Life
Delonte West and Caressa Madden married in 2013. Before it, he was married to another woman, and it had ended in divorce in 2010. Caressa and West have two children together. West worked in a furniture shop in 2011 during the NBA lockout. He had bipolar disorder and went through depression. A video of West getting beaten up went viral in January of 2020.
