Early Life
Born as youngest daughter among four sisters, Selma was born on 23rd June 1972 in Southfield, Detroit, the US to Molly Ann and Elliot Beitner. Her mother, the Molly, was a judge, and her father used to work as an attorney. When Selma was 23, her parents got divorced.
Selma Blair went to different schools for his high school and middle school. She went to Hillel Day School and Cranbrook Kingswood for high school. Later in 1990, she went to Kalamazoo College for two years, studying photography. When she moved to New York in 1992, she went to New York University. That’s when she got interested in acting and joined acting classes in Stella Adler Conservatory and Stonestreet Screen Acting Workshop. She was transferred from NYU to the University of Michigan in 1994 and graduated from university with a bachelor of fine arts and arts in photography and psychology.
Career
After her studies, she went to New York to pursue her career. In the early days, she only got minor roles in films and appeared as a guest actress on TV shows. Her first films were The Broccoli Theory, In & Out, Amazon High, and many other dramas. But after many struggles, she made her breakthrough with an appearance in a cult drama film named Cruel Intentions in 1999. Her best performance, along with other actors Ryan Phillippe and Gellar, helped her win MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss with Gellar.
She also made another famous appearance in teen sitcom Zoe, Duncan, Jack and Jane by WB as Zoe in 1999. The show was doing quite well but only lasted two years. With her role, she was able to get nominated for Teen Choice Award.
After Selma Blair’s recognition with such tremendous performance, she was able to get the role of Vivian Kensington in the comedy Legally Blonde in 2001. During her acting, she got close to Witherspoon. Appearing along with Christina Applegate and Cameron Diaz in the romantic comedy movie The Sweetest the Thing next year 2002, she was able to win another nomination for Teen Choice Award. After her successful films, she starred in superhero movie Hellboy as Liz Sherman, who has pyrokinetic superpowers.
In 2008 Selma Blair appeared in the comedy TV show Kath & Kim by NBC, which only lasted for one season and 17 episodes. Getting more involved in television, she played the therapist’s role in the comedy series Anger Management by Charlie Sheen in 2012. She was fired from the show in June 2013 as she complained about the show’s executive producer.
After her other works throughout the years, she came back to FX, getting a role in American Crime Story: The People vs. O. J. Simpson in 2016 February. She also starred in a drama film named Mothers and Daughters, which was released in May 2016. She debuted in another comedy but horror, Mom and Dad, which was released in 2018. As of her latest roles, she is being cast in sci-fi series Another Life.
Except for acting, she photographed Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel Vision, and herself became the face for it in 2005. At New York Fashion Week in 2018, she walked in Christian Siriano Fashion Show.
