Bolanos is the son of Francisco Gomez Linares (father) and Elsa Bolanos Aguilar (mother). His father is a painter and illustrator, and his mother is a bilingual secretary.

Bolanos had an older brother named Francisco, a younger brother named Horacio Gomez Bolanos, who played the roles of Godinez in El Chavo del Ocho, and an even older half-brother, the product of one of his father’s liaisons with another woman.

Regarding his educational background, Roberto studied mechanical engineering at the National Autonomous University of Mexico but never came to practice that profession. Roberto Gomez Bolanos was discovered as an actor while waiting in line to apply for a job as a writer; soon, he started writing and starring in his children’s comedy shows. His first show was Los Supergenios de la Mesa Cuadrada, a sketch comedy show that aired in 1968. The program also cast Ramon Valdes, Maria Antonieta de las Nieves, and Ruben Aguirre.

Roberto Gomez Bolanos known were in the shows El Chavo del Ocho and El Chapulin Colorado. The series was aired in 1973 and were based on sketches of the same name from Los Supergenius. The shows were assembled by the Mexican TV network Televisa and published in 124 countries. He played an 8-year-old boy who often refuges inside a wooden rain barrel in a Mexican neighborhood. In El Chapulin, Colorado, Gomez played a good-hearted superhero who got involved in several situations.

Matt Groening has also said that he created the Bumblebee Man character after watching El Chapulin Colorado in a motel on the United States-Mexico border. Bolanos was also noted as a composer.
