Early life

Paul Sparks was born on 16th October of 1971 in Oklahoma called Lawton in the United States. His full name is Paul W. Sparks, and he is the son of football coach Michael “Mike” Sparks and an elementary school teacher, Jane Sparks. He graduated from Marlow High School in 1990. During his time in high school, he was a member of M.O.S.T. (Marlow Outlaw Speech Team). Later he joined Oklahoma State University with a scholarship, but he eventually decided to change his chemistry course to fine arts. He joined New York University Tisch School of the Arts, and in 1995, he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in drama.

Film:

Paul Sparks made his film debut in 2005. He played a small role in the psychological horror film Headspace as Jason. He then played small roles in numerous other films, namely the Treatment, Blackbird, Rachel Getting Married, Deception, Afterschool, Please Give, Edge of Darkness, Return, and others.

In 2012, he played the major role as a carver in the drama film Mud, for which he earned Film Independent Spirit Awards in 2013. The same year, he landed his first starring role in Noah Buschel’s romantic film Sparrows Dance, where he portrayed Wes alongside co-star Marin Ireland. The following year, he went on to play small roles in the historical drama film Parkland as harry McCormick.

In 2015, he appeared in the crime drama film called Stealing Cars as Conrad Sean Lewis; then, he made his appearance in the American science fiction film Midnight Special as Agent Miller in 2016. The same year, he appeared in 2 other films: All the Birds Have Flown South as Stephen and in the drama film In the Radiant City as Michael Hurley.

In 2017, he starred in the dark comedy thriller film Thoroughbreds as Mark; then he also played the major role as James Gordon Bennett Sr. in the American musical drama film The Greatest Showman. Further, he appeared in the film Human capital in 2019 and The Lovebirds in 2020.

Paul Sparks made his television debut in 1998, from the tv series Trinity where he made his appearance as Rod. He then made his next appearance in 2000 in the American police procedural and legal drama tv series called Law & Order as Paul Luterik, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 2001 as Marvin Posey, Law & Order: Criminal Intent in 2005.

In 2010, he landed the major role in the crime drama tv series Boardwalk Empire as Mickey Doyle making his breakthrough. He earned 2 Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2010 and 2011 for his performance in the series and later earned its nomination in 2014.

His other notable play performances are Blackbird in 2004 as Baylis, Orange Flower Water in 2005 as Brad Youngquist, Essential Self-Defense in 2007 as Yul Carroll, for which he earned Drama Desk Awards nominations for his performances.

His other theatre performances were Hedda Gabler in 2009; Dusk Rings a Bell in 2010, Buried Child in 2016, for which he received Lucille Lortel Awards nomination and Edward Albee’s At Home at the Zoo in 2018 for which he received Drama Desk Awards, Lucille Lortel Awards and Outer Critics Circle Awards nomination.

He tied his knot with actress Annie Parisse, and she gave birth to his son Emmett Sparks in 2009 and gave birth to a daughter named Lydia Sparks in 2014.
