The Specialty Records producer chose Richard after listening to his tape. Little recorded Tutti Frutti, which became a hit and peaked at No. 2 on Billboard’s Rhythm and Blues Best-Sellers chart in 1955. One of his songs, Long Tall Sally, peaked at No. 1 on the R&B chart in 1956.

Richard surprised his fans when he abruptly publicized that he had received a sign from God to leave the music industry. Richard enrolled in Oakwood College to study theology and left Specialty Records in 1959. He formed the Little Richard Evangelistic Team and started recording gospel music. The group has published three religious albums.

In the 1960s, Little decided to make a comeback in pop music. In 1967, his album The Explosive Little, directed by his friend Larry Williams, failed to chart on Billboard. Little failed to make a comeback in rock and roll, and his records were not commercially successful.

Richard did, however, make a fantastic comeback as a live artist, performing at casinos and resorts. Richard became the main attraction at many shows, including the Atlantic City Pop Festival and the Toronto Pop Festival. Little regained celebrity after his success as a live performer. He was also featured on several television shows, involves The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and The Dick Cavett Show.

In 1970, Little became addicted to drugs and alcohol and decided to leave rock and roll music. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he featured in several films in minor roles. On May 9, 2020, Little Richard died in Tullahoma, Tennessee, from bone cancer.
