Early life

Ali MacGraw was born on 1st April of 1939 in a town of New York called Pound Ridge in the United States. Her full name is Elizabeth Alice MacGraw and she was born to Richard MacGraw and Frances Klein who were commercial artists. Her only brother Dick also followed in her parent’s footsteps and became an artist.

MacGraw completed her high school at Rosemary Hall and later graduated from Wellesley College.



Ali MacGraw started her career as a photographer at the beginning then she transcended into modeling and later on films and televisions. She also made her way to the Broadway plays appearing in the British stage play called Festen in 2006. Her second and final play was Love Letters which she performed alongside the actor Ryan O’Neil in 2016.

MacGraw made her film debut in 1968 from David Lowell Rich’s American crime neo-noir film, A Lovely Way to Die where she appeared as Melody. Following year, she starred in Larry Peerce’s American romantic comedy-drama film Goodbye, Columbus as Brenda Patimkin alongside co-star Richard Benjamin. She gained Golden Globe Award for Most Promising Newcomer – Female in 1969 and she also received a BAFTA Award nomination the same year for her performance in the film.

She further made her breakthrough in 1970 with her starring role in Arthur Hiller’s romantic film, Love Story. In the film, she portrayed the character of Jennifer Cavalleri starring alongside co-star Ryan O’Neal. For her performance, she earned David di Donatello for Best Foreign Actress, and her second Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Drama also received an Academy Award nomination the same year.

MacGraw further starred in several films like The Getaway, Convoy, Players, Just Tell Me What You Want in the following years. She later played small roles in films like Natural Causes, Glam, and Get Bruce.



Ali MacGraw made her television debut with the miniseries The Winds of War appearing as Natalie Jastrow in 1983. The same year, she also appeared in China Rose portraying the character of Rose.

In 1985, she played a major role in the American prime television soap opera, Dynasty. In the series, she portrayed the character of Lady Ashley Mitchell making her appearances in over 14 episodes. she made her special appearance in Joan Alexandra and Friends Salute Heide Abromowitz as herself in 1988. In 1992, she made her appearance in the tv film, Survive the Savage Sea as Claire Carpenter. She then played a small role in an American Western film, Gunsmoke: The Long Ride as Uncle Jane Merkel in the following year.

Since then, she started narrating several films like The Trail of the Painted Ponies, Split Estate, Landscapes of Enchantment, and Valles Caldera: The Science in 2012 putting an end to her entertainment career.

Talking about the personal life of Ali MacGraw, she is currently divorced and single. She has been married thrice in the past. She was first committed to a Harvard-educated banker named Robin Hoen in 1961 after 5 years of dating but unfortunately, they got separated after a year. She then tied her knot with an American film producer named Robert Evans in 1969. She gave birth to her first son, Josh with him. The couple got divorced in 1972. After a year, she married American actor, Steve McQueen in 1973 and got separated in 1978. Since then, she has been in a relationship with several famous directors, musicians, producers like Warren Beatty, Bill Hudson, Henry Wolf, Peter Weller, and others.

Her only son, Josh tied his knot with singer, Roxy Saint and gave birth to Jackson. MacGraw confessed when she was in her early 20s, she had an abortion. She was also treated in Betty Ford center for her sex and alcohol addiction which were all revealed from her biography called Moving Pictures.
